Alfredo Castro | Gael García Bernal and Antonia Zegers
Gael García Bernal stars in Chile's first Oscar-nominated
drama, about the 1988 referendum on Pinochet's long-term grip on the
presidency and the unorthodox methods of the “NO” side's ad campaign. Based on Antonio Skármeta’s play El Plebiscito,
Bernal plays René Saavedra as a fish out of water ad man, who ends up
parting the seas. The atrocities committed under Pinochet were
innumerable, but by conceiving an apparently superficial series of TV
ads filled with bright colors, song, dance and over-the-top positivity,
Saavedra finds a way past people’s fear and resignation, toward profound
political change.
